Weekly Film Music Roundup (July 7 2023)

Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is supernatural horror sequel Insidious: The Red Door directed by Patrick Wilson and starring Ty Simpkins, Wilson himself, Rose Byrne, Andrew Astor, Sinclair Daniel and Hiam Abbass. The film’s original music is composed by Joseph Bishara (The Conjuring, AnnabelleThe Curse of La Llorona, Malignant). Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening wide today is the comedy Joy Ride directed by Adele Lim and starring Stephanie Hsu, Ashley Park, Sabrina Wu, Sherry Cola, Ronny Chieng, David Denman, Annie Mumolo, Lori Tan Chinn and Chris Pang. Nathan Matthew David (Deadly Class, Young Rock, Stephen Curry: Underrated, The Last Word) has composed the film’s original score. Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as multiple songs from the movie today. Already playing in theaters nationwide since this past Tuesday, July 4, is the thriller Sound of Freedom directed by Alejandro Monteverde and starring Jim Caviezel, Mira Sorvino, Kurt Fuller, Bill Camp, Eduardo Verástegui and José Zúñiga. The film’s original score is composed by Javier Navarrete (Pan’s LabyrinthWrath of the Titans, Antlers, Greta). No word on a score release. Opening in select theaters is the thriller The Lesson directed by Alice Troughton and starring Richard E. Grant, Daryl McCormack, Julie Delpy, Stephen McMillan and Crispin Letts. Isobel Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, The Phantom of the Open, EmmaVita & Virginia, Munich: The Edge of War, Roar) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening in select theaters is the sci-fi comedy Biosphere co-written and directed by Mel Eslyn and starring Sterling K. Brown and Mark Duplass. The film’s original music is composed by Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans (Ozark, The GiftBoy ErasedThe Outsider, Tokyo Vice, The StaircaseEnemy). No soundtrack album has been released. Another movie opening in select theaters today is the documentary The YouTube Effect directed by Alex Winter about the streaming platform’s ascension and potential fall. Paul Haslinger (Halt and Catch Fire, Monster Hunter, Underworld, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, CrankDeath Race) has composed the film’s original music. Node Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Opening in select theaters and on VOD today is the western Dead Man’s Hand co-written and directed by Brian Skiba and starring Stephen Dorff, Cole Hauser, Jack Kilmer, Camille Collard, Mo Brings Plenty, Randall Batinkoff and Forrie J. Smith. The film’s original music is composed by Steve Dorff (Murphy BrownGrowing Pains, Dudley Do-Right, Blast from the PastMajor Dad). Already playing in select theaters since this past Tuesday is the documentary Once Upon a Time in Uganda directed by Cathryne Czubek about Ugandan brickmaker Isaac Nabwana’s journey of becoming a filmmaker. Andrew Hollander (Waitress, My Friend Dahmer, Words on Bathroom Walls, Serious Moonlight, Gray Matters) has composed the film’s original music. The composer has released a soundtrack album featuring his score today.
