Gustavo Santaolalla to Score Rodrigo Prieto’s ‘Pedro Páramo’

Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, The Motorcycle Diaries, BabelThe Book of Life) is set to score the upcoming Mexican Netflix original film Pedro Páramo. The movie marks the directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman) and stars Manuel García-Rulfo in the title role, alongside Tenoch Huerta, Ilse Salas, Mayra Batalla, Roberto Sosa, Héctor Kotsifakis, Dolores Heredia, Noé Hernández, Giovanna Zacarías and Yoshira Escárrega. The drama is based on the novel by Juan Rulfo about a man who travels to his recently deceased mother’s hometown to find his father, only to come across a literal ghost town. Mateo Gil (The Sea Inside, Agora) wrote the screenplay. Stacy Perskie and Rafael Ley are producing the project. Pedro Páramo has just started production and is expected to premiere in 2024 on Netflix.

Santoalalla is also expected to return as co-composer of HBO’s The Last of Us, which has been renewed for a second season. He also recently co-scored the National Geographic documentary Wild Life, which is currently playing in theaters before
