Weekly Film Music Roundup (June 7, 2024)

Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the action comedy Bad Boys: Ride or Die directed by Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah and starring Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Alexander Ludwig, Eric Dane, Vanessa Hudgens, Ioan Gruffudd and Joe Pantoliano.  The film’s original score is composed by Lorne Balfe (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Bad Boys for Life, His Dark Materials, Black Widow, Top Gun: Maverick, Black Adam, The Wheel of TimeThe LEGO Batman Movie). Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music today and Epic Records has released a separate album featuring the songs from the movie by Black Eyed Peas, El Alfa, Becky G, J.I.D, 21 Lil Harold, ScarLip & others. Also opening wide is the supernatural horror thriller The Watchers written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan and starring Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouere and Oliver Finnegan. Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man, Penny DreadfulNocturnal Animals, The Nun, Till, W.E.EmilyThe Courier, Romeo and Juliet). has composed the film’s original music. Opening in select U.S. theaters is the German drama Someday We’ll Tell Each Other Everything (Irgendwann werden wir uns alles erzählen) co-written and directed by Emily Atef and starring Marlene Burow, Felix Kramer, Cedric Eich, Silke Bodenbender, Florian Panzner, Jördis Triebel, Christian Erdmann, Axel Werner, Victoria Mayer and Christine Schorn. The film’s original music is composed by Christoph M. Kaiser & Julian Maas (The People vs. Fritz Bauer, Two Lives, The Silent Revolution3 Days in Quiberon). Oblique Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score last year when the movie opened in Germany. Also opening in select theaters today is the Canadian drama Longing written and directed by Savi Gabizon and starring Richard Gere, Suzanne Clément and Diane Kruger. Owen Pallett (HerDream ScenarioThe Box, Alice/Darling, Life, Spaceship Earth, On the Count of Three) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening in select theaters today before coming out on VOD on June 18 is the Canadian comedy drama I Used to Be Funny written and directed by Ally Pankiw and starring Rachel Sennott, Olga Petsa, Sabrina Jalees, Jason Jones, Caleb Hearon, Ennis Esmer and Dani Kind. The film’s original music is composed by Ames Bessada (Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful, Holly Hobbie). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows an aspiring stand-up comedian struggling with PTSD as she decides whether or not to join the search for a missing teenage girl she used to nanny, premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival and is being distributed by Utopia.

Also opening in select U.S. theaters today is the French/Senegalese/Malian romantic drama Banel & Adama written and directed by Ramata-Toulaye Sy and starring Khady Mane, Mamadou Diallo, Binta Racine Sy, Moussa Sow, Ndiabel Diallo, Amadou Ndiaye and Oumar Samba Dia. Bachar Mar-Khalifé (Skies of LebanonMy Brothers and I) has composed the film’s original music. Balcoon has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last year when the movie opened overseas. Another movie opening in select theaters today is the drama Cottontail written and directed by Patrick Dickinson and starring Lily Franky, Tae Kimura, Aoife Hinds, Rin Takanashi, Ryo Nishikido and Ciarán Hinds. The film’s original music composed by Stefan Gregory (The DigThe Rooster). Noisy Miner has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last week. Opening in select theaters and on VOD today is the horror thriller Trim Season co-written and directed by Ariel Vida and starring Jane Badler, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Ally Ioannides, Alex Essoe, Bethlehem Million and Cory Hart. Joseph Bishara (The Conjuring, Insidious, Tarot, MalignantAnnabelle, The Unholy, The Curse of La Llorona) has composed the film’s original music. Void Recordings has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening in select theaters and on VOD today is the comedy drama Late Bloomers directed by Lisa Steen and starring Karen Gillan, Margaret Sophie Stein, Kevin Nealon, Jermaine Fowler and Talia Balsam. The film’s original music is composed by Osei Essed (Crater, Saint X, Katrina Babies, How to Survive a Pandemic). No soundtrack album has been released. The movie, which follows a 28-year-old woman who drunkenly breaks her hip, when she meets a cranky, elderly Polish woman in the hospital and takes on a job as her caregiver, premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival and is being released by Vertical Entertainment.

Also opening in select theaters and on VOD is the British body horror movie Kill Your Lover written and directed by Alix Austin & Keir Siewert and starring Paige Gilmour, Shane Quigley Murphy, May Kelly, Chloe Wigmore and Joshua Whincup. Thibault Chavanis (The Impact) has composed the film’s original music. The composer has released a soundtrack album featuring his score today.
